A dial is a piece of your work, written down properly once, and then run again and again without decaying. Three ways to come by the first one, one loop for running it, and one face for however many you end up with.
Getting the first dial
Start from one that exists
Take a dial somebody has already built for this kind of work — ours or a partner’s — and run it as it stands. The fastest route, and the method is already somebody’s expertise.
Describe the job
Tell us what the work involves in plain language and it comes back as a draft dial with the stages laid out. Correcting a draft is a much easier conversation than starting from nothing.
Hand over the spreadsheet
The process is probably already written down somewhere, badly, in a workbook. Give us that and it becomes a dial people actually run, rather than a document nobody opens.
However it starts, it stays yours: as the work changes, the dial changes with it. A partner edition is the deliberate exception — those are fixed by design, because the standard is the product.
Running it
There is no separate reporting step. The record and the work are the same action, which is the only arrangement that survives a busy week.
Somebody does the step
On a laptop at a desk or a phone in a plant room. The dial says what the step is and what it needs, so there is nothing to remember.
The proof attaches to it
A photograph, a certificate, a signature. It lands on the step it evidences, which is the whole reason a green means anything later.
The face moves
Not because anyone updated a status — because the step is genuinely done. Everybody who can see the dial now knows, without being told.
Nothing is chased
What is late is visible as late, to the person who owns it and to whoever is looking. The status meeting stops being where the news is.
Then it happens forty times.
Each job keeps its own dial and its own owner. The face above them is made of theirs, so an overview can never quietly disagree with the detail underneath — and the ones that need you are the ones you can see.
